A small stock pond build starts with test holes across the basin footprint. OSU Extension advises digging them on a 50 or 100 foot grid to find rock, sand or gravel. Those pockets bleed water off, so finding them early can save the whole pond. We size up the watershed above the site as well, since runoff is what keeps a pond full.
We strip topsoil off the dam footprint, then cut a core trench into tight native soil. The dam is built back in compacted clay lifts, with the front face packed first. OSU Extension advises 3 to 1 slopes below the waterline and little water shallower than three and a half feet. Big ponds and tall dams want a dozer and pan, which sits past our equipment.
A silted pond gets cleaned out when the water is low or the basin is dry. The mini excavator digs from the bank and the track loaders carry the muck out. Deepening the basin at the same time buys back the storage the silt took. OSU Extension notes that dirt roads are a major source of clay, silt and sand washing into ponds.
Late summer and fall are our usual window, since that is when most ponds sit low enough to work. Spoil comes out wet and heavy, so it needs a place to go before we start. Most of it goes onto the dam or gets spread thin on pasture to dry out. When there is no room on site, the gooseneck trailer hauls it off.
Small dam repair on a farm pond comes down to clay and compaction. We cut out the soft or leaking section and rebuild it back in packed clay lifts. OSU Extension warns that trees are the leading reason earthen dams get condemned during inspections. Animal burrows from gophers, muskrats and beavers raise the odds of a blowout on a small dam.
The auxiliary spillway is the broad grassed channel to one side of the dam. It carries heavy rain past the dam, so grass cover and a smooth channel matter. Keeping the dam and spillway mowed is a brush hogging job we handle on the same trip. When a dam is past what our machines can do, we say so when you request a free on-site quote.
Most farm ponds do not need a state permit, and the size of the dam decides it. The Oklahoma Water Resources Board requires a permit for any dam more than 25 feet in height. The same goes for a dam holding more than 50 acre-feet, and for any high hazard dam. The stock ponds we build sit well under both numbers.
The board also exempts domestic use from water permitting, which covers household use and stock water. The Stephens County Conservation District in Duncan administers the state cost-share program, and pond is a listed practice.
