Gravel dumped on a flat, tired base is a short-term rental — the first wet month works it into the clay and the drive is right back where it started. The build order that lasts is dirt first: cut the drive to shape, crown the center so water sheds to the sides, deal with the soft spots that would pump mud up through the rock, and give the runoff somewhere to go when it leaves. Then the stone goes down in courses and gets worked in tight.
That's also why repair is usually regrading, not just "more gravel." The stone that vanished is mostly still there — pushed to the edges and drowned in the middle. Reshaping recovers it, new material tops it where it's genuinely thin, and the crown starts shedding water again. Cheaper than blanket-loading rock, and it lasts.
The home driveway is the classic job — from the county road to the house or shop, shaped to drain, solid in the wet, no more rim-deep ruts in February. New builds get the driveway-and-pad package together, which is the efficient order: the drive goes in able to carry the construction traffic that's about to use it hardest.
Past the house it turns into road work: lanes back to a barn or a deer camp, lease roads that have to survive a wet season, and the working surfaces — parking pads for trucks and trailers, equipment yards, the gravel apron around a shop where mud would otherwise move in. Same rules at every scale: shape, drainage, then stone.
Southwest Oklahoma weather is a driveway torture test — baked hard all summer, then hit with gully-washers that move any water-shaped thing that isn't defended. Red clay is slick when wet and bricklike when dry, which makes the gravel layer's job less about looks and more about keeping your tires out of the clay in the first place.
