A gravel driveway around Comanche is working infrastructure. This is the south end of Stephens County, eight miles down US-81 from Duncan with Highway 53 running the crossroads, and the country around town is rolling ranch and farm ground threaded with oilfield leases, pecan bottoms along Cow Creek, and homesteads sitting a quarter mile off the section line. Places around Comanche sit back off the road, and a drive that runs a few hundred feet is a small road with a road's problems. Water finds any flat stretch and runs down it instead of off it, traffic pushes the middle hollow, and by February the ruts are deep enough to steer for you. Length is exactly why shape matters more than stone here: every foot of drive either sheds water or channels it.

It's the same trade at every scale, and it pairs naturally with the dirt work that fixes the ground beside the lane.
Most bad drives around Comanche aren't short of gravel; they're short of shape. Years of traffic push the stone to the edges and drown the middle, and the reflex fix, dumping fresh rock in the ruts, buys one season at full price. Regrading recovers the stone that's already there, rebuilds the crown, and puts new material only where the drive is genuinely thin. It costs less and it lasts.
