Grinding chews the stump into chips below grade and leaves the roots in the dirt. That works well for one big shade tree stump in a tight yard where nothing is going to be built. Digging lifts the whole root ball out, so nothing is left underground to rot or sprout. Digging is the right call where a pad, a driveway, a fence line or a foundation goes over the spot. It also wins on a cleared lot with a lot of stumps.
Published guides price both ways. LawnStarter puts stump grinding at $131 to $438, with a national average of $272 per job. The same publisher puts full removal with the root plate at $150 to $300 per stump. Fixr shows a wider gap, $150 to $300 to grind and $200 to $700 to remove. We do not own a grinder, so we dig. When a grinder is the better buy for your stump, we say so at the quote. A real number for your ground comes after we look at it on site.
It starts with a look at the property and a count of the stumps by size. The quote is free and it comes after we see the ground. Before any digging we file the OKIE811 locate request so gas, power, water and phone lines get marked. OKIE811 asks for that request at least three business days before the dig, and state law sets the floor at 48 hours, not counting the call day, weekends or legal holidays. The ticket stays good for 14 calendar days, which sets the window we work in.
On the job day we dig around the stump and cut the big roots. The excavator then lifts the root ball out and shakes the dirt off it, so your topsoil stays on site. Stumps get piled where you want them for a burn, or loaded on the gooseneck dump trailer and hauled off. The hole gets backfilled in lifts and packed tight, one layer at a time. Species decides how hard a stump fights back. Nebraska Extension says eastern redcedar is a non-sprouter, and trees cut below the lowest branches will not regrow. Mesquite plays the other way. Texas rangeland research describes an underground bud zone that produces resprouts when above-ground parts are removed. The 1964 USDA soil survey of Stephens County maps Kirkland and Renfrow soils across the uplands. It calls them claypan soils, because the subsoil is compact, blocky clay that is very slowly permeable. The USDA Renfrow series sheet puts that subsoil at 35 to 55 percent clay. That clay holds a stump hole open well, and it turns sticky the moment it gets wet. Wet clay will not pack back into the hole, so a soaked week pushes stump work down the schedule. Most yard and fence line stumps are in range for a Bobcat E35 class machine. That covers cedar, mesquite, hackberry and elm of moderate trunk size, plus old hedge row stumps. The machine has enough reach to get under a root plate that size and break it loose. It also fits through a gate and works close to a house without tearing up the yard. On a cleared lot we take the stumps in a run, biggest first.
Some stumps are past our equipment and we say so at the quote. A very large mature hardwood stump wants a bigger machine or a grinder. Taking down big standing trees is not our work either. We do not own a grinder or a bucket truck, and we do not climb trees. When that is what your job needs, we point you at the kind of outfit that does it.
