Brush hogging around Waurika is the holding action that keeps ranch and hunting ground usable. Jefferson County is mesquite country running down to the Red River, and the ground here doesn't wait politely: skip a couple of growing seasons and pasture turns to briar, sprouts and thicket that a light bush hog wants no part of. Waurika sits at the US-81 and US-70 junction with Beaver Creek running right through town, and the lake, creek and ranch country around it is exactly the kind of ground our cutter was bought for.

Mesquite is the long war in Jefferson County, and mowing is the line that keeps it from advancing. A yearly cut takes the year's sprouts, briar and weeds off at the ground before anything gets woody, which keeps grass in charge and keeps the ground drivable, grazeable and huntable. Skip the cut and the math turns fast: sprouts thicken into brush, brush roots deepen, and in a few seasons the mowing bill has become a clearing bill with an excavator in it.

The country around Waurika Lake, the Corps reservoir built on Beaver Creek in the 1970s, holds some of the best hunting ground in this corner of the state, and hunting land needs mowing on a calendar. Lanes and shooting corridors want cutting in late summer so the ground settles quiet before season. Food plot edges need opening while there's still time for regrowth deer will use. Access routes need to carry a loaded truck in wet November.
Creek-bottom ground is its own job.
