Trenching around Lawton is measured in real distance. Outside the city, homes and shops run on rural water, and Comanche County's rural water districts set their meters at the road. The house might be a hundred feet past that meter; the barn might be six hundred. Every foot between is a trench somebody has to dig through clay that laughs at shovels most of the year. Several rural water districts serve the country around Lawton, and their standard arrangement is the same: the district maintains the line to the meter, and everything past the meter is yours.
